At this time of year we traditionally start all our clipping, pruning, weeding and grass cutting. Although our gardens may be pretty to look at, are they a safe place to be? Many children venture into our gardens not to look at the many flowers and pretty borders, but to get into mischief. The garden shed, to many children is a place to make their den, their little hide-a-way, however it may be stocked full of the usual half filled paint pots, poisons and chemicals and that’s not to mention the petrol lawnmowers and hedge cutters.
If children do frequent your garden please make sure your shed is securely locked up. Another hazard is when we spray our flowers with chemicals, make sure all are aware of the dangers don’t let our kids try and touch them till its safe. Garden ponds look great, many hours and thousands of pounds spent on getting them just the way you want, teaming with fish and plant life, these are always a fascination for children.
5 children die each year from drowning in garden ponds, as every parents knows it only takes seconds for a newly walking baby to stumble out of sight. If you have a garden pond try to take precautions to stop children from entering the area its situated. If you are planning a garden pond try and position it where it can easily be seen, talk to manufactures for other safety devices. Remember a garden is there to be enjoyed not a death trap. Whilst writing this, another 3 year old child has drowned in a garden pond in England.
