The heading of this article is more than just a question. Many employees turn up at work everyday unaware of the hidden dangers that may face. Faulty wiring, spillage on the floor not cleaned away properly, non-serviced machinery, loose fittings… the list is endless. The after-effects are sometimes deathly!
Its no surprise to hear that the government and in some cases insurers are wanting to release to the public a name and shame list of employers that constantly flaunt health and safety regulations. By ignoring laws that are there to protect the employees, company bosses show a contempt to their staff and their well-being within their working environment.
Safety signs are a informative symbol that are strategically placed to help protect a person from a danger that is known. In most cases they also help protect an employer from paying out compensation if a claim is raised against them after an unfortunate accident has occurred or at least the majority of negligence is taken away from the employer by the presence of the safety sign.
Accidents happen! They are learning curves that we can learn from and help protect others from similar circumstances by alerting them of the dangers even by the introduction of a well placed safety sign. A concious employer will act after one of his staff has been injured to help stop a repeat of a similar incident.
The law comes down heavily on employers that constantly put their employees in danger. Is it not better to help protect your staff than to be named and shamed as someone who persistently puts people under their responsibility in danger? We all have a responsibility to help protect others from known harm.
