In today’s health and safety culture, being told what is safe and what is not by some men and women in suits is mad. I have just witnessed one of the craziest events in my life, the annual Cheese Rolling at Cooper’s Hill Gloucestershire. The purpose of the race is to win a ’round of double Gloucestershire cheese’.
The victims (competitors) wait at the top of the hill, the cheese is released (reaching speeds of 70 mph) then they run down the hill after it, first by the winning line wins the cheese. Sounds great fun till you see the hill its 1:1 gradient, it’s a good job St Johns Ambulance was there to cart off the injured to hospital with cuts, scrapes and sprains. Witness the event for yourself…
