Britain as a nation doesn’t see much sun, but when it comes out, we all seem to go mad. Kids are up early in the morning, swimming pools are filled and the bbq’s are organized. Well what a weekend this one has been, with the thermometer hitting the high 70s, English and Scottish football finals and a talent final could we ask for anything else? What about sun protection! How many of us awoke on Sunday morning feeling like we had been stuck an oven for 2hrs, all with burns on our heads, shoulders and legs?
We all have a tendency to smother our kids in factor 50 and don’t bother about ourselves, saying “Its only May and wont be warm enough”. With skin cancer on the increase we really need to cover ourselves up. It has been reported that 10,000 people each year now develop a malignant melanoma in the quest for that tan, or just forget to apply sun protection.
Skin cancer is now the most common cancer in Britain today. Experts report that the new cases of women having skin cancer is now double that of breast cancer, 80% of this cancer is due to UV radiation or direct sunlight which is preventable. Next time the sun decides to come out, remember to cover your body with a suitable sun protection factor. Ask yourself is looking good that important to you?
